Public and private sector banks in various states are closed today, Monday, September 16, 2024, in honor of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, a significant occasion for the Muslim community.

Eid-e-Milad and Bank Holidays in Certain States

Eid-e-Milad marks the celebration of Prophet Muhammad’s birth and is also referred to as Nabi Day or Mawlid. In India, this occasion is observed as a public holiday and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by Muslims worldwide. Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and his teachings continue to inspire and guide people across the globe.

On this day, banks in Gujarat, Mizoram, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Manipur, Jammu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand will remain closed in observance of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi.

However, the Maharashtra government has made a change in its public holiday schedule. According to a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) press release dated September 14, 2024, Maharashtra has shifted the holiday from September 16 to September 18, 2024, under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. As a result, there will be no banking transactions involving government securities, foreign exchange, money markets, or rupee interest rate derivatives on September 18, 2024. Any outstanding transactions due on this day will be processed on September 19, 2024.

Even though bank branches are closed, online banking services remain available, allowing customers to carry out transactions, check balances, and perform other essential banking tasks with ease.
